The University of Glamorgan (Welsh: Prifysgol Morgannwg) is a South Wales-based university that formed the University of South Wales in April 2013 before merging with the University of Wales Newport. The University is based in Rhonda Cernon Taff, Pontypridd, with campuses in Trefforest, Glyntaff, Merthyr Tydfil, Tyn y Wern (Glamorgan Sports Park) and Cardiff. The university has four colleges and is the only one in Wales with the University of Wales.

The University of Glamorgan was established in 1913 as the South Wales and Monmouthshire School of Mines, a mining school in Treveline, Ponte Pride, serving the large coal mining industry in the South Wales valleys. The school is owned and funded by the major coal owners in Wales and levies a tenth of a penny per tonne of coal produced by the companies involved. The school started with 17 mining diploma students, 3 of them from China. The school was taken over by Glamorgan County Council during the Great Depression and became Glamorgan Institute of Technology in 1949 to reflect its expanding portfolio, and Glamorgan Institute of Technology in 1958. By then the institution had expanded to offer a range of full-time, sandwich and part-time courses in science, technology and business, and in 1967 it added the first “Welsh for adults” course. In 1970, the college became a polytechnic. Glamorgan Institute of Technology merged with Barry’s Glamorgan Institute of Education and was redesignated Wales Institute of Technology in 1975 before being granted university status as University of Glamorgan in 1992.

From 2003 until its merger, the university has been actively implementing a ‘growth strategy’, merging with Merthyr Tydfil College in 2004/5 and forming a ‘strategic alliance’ with the Royal Welsh Academy of Music and Drama in 2006. The Royal Academy becomes part of the “Glamorgan Group” of institutions. In 2007, a new media, design and arts teaching and research facility ‘ATRiuM’ opened in Cardiff city centre. The new Student Union building on the Trevory campus opened in September 2010.

In July 2012, the University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales Newport announced that they had begun negotiations aimed at integrating the two institutions. On 17 December 2012, the name of the new university was announced as the University of South Wales. The combined university served approximately 21,500 students, of which 10,227 were enrolled as full-time undergraduate students. The university offers around 200 courses and in 2009 claimed to have one of the highest graduate employment rates in Wales, reporting that 94.3% of 2007-08 graduates were employed within six months of graduating.
